Godzilla

Recently I wrote about Tim Burton’s Batman and how you should give movies that you didn’t care for a second chance. We change as time goes on and so does how we process movies. In the case of Batman, I found myself really enjoying it. In this case with Godzilla, I couldn’t even finish it. Look its not that its bad or that money was not spent on it, its just that it was made wrong. It has the wrong actors, the wrong tone and a bad monster. There are very few things that we all can agree on right in this world, but one is that Godzilla should look like well, Godzilla. Instead we got a monster that looked like some downgraded cheap knockoff that seemed to come from the mind of someone who had never seen on the classic Japanese Godzilla movies.

So what is the plot that makes this trash go? Radiation fallout has made a lizard grow to a huge size. After laying waste to New York City, a group goes in to kill the nest before we get smaller killer monsters. Not the most original story but if done right, it could have been a fun action romp. Instead what we got was a movie that didn’t know if it wanted to do action or half ass comedy. Matthew Broderick is so out of place that you start to be thankful that this didn’t sink his career. The rest of the cast tries to be funny at times and its all just purely dumb. About the only one who feels as right for their part is Jean Reno, but he is a legend so no surprise there.

Look, I get it, Roland Emmerich isn’t known for high class movies, but even in our dumb action movies like Pacific Rim we want it to make somewhat sense or at least get the monsters to look like monsters. Which brings me to my biggest problem with this movie, the change in Godzilla. I can’t let that one go. It is so awful and cheap that a giant cat would have looked better.

So should you see this? Ugh maybe a 10 year old would enjoy it. Maybe if you were wanting to see a night of bad movies this might work. But honestly, there isn’t much reason to have to see this.
